Lower abdominal pain is common among people belonging to all ages around the world and it is a symptom of all gastrointestinal disorders.  In some minor cases, it can be caused by indigestion or problems like constipation etc. however, it can also be a symptom of some severe disorders. There are a lot of cases where people suffer from lower abdominal pain after eating. Let us explore its possible causes.

Causes

The causes behind lower abdominal pain after eating can range from the intake of improper food to some underlying disorders. Following are a few common causes.

 1- Irritable Bowl Syndrome (IBS)

It is one of the most common causes of lower abdominal pain after eating. Though the exact cause of this disorder is not yet known but factors like diet and stress may be responsible. It is characterized by diarrhea, bloating, constipation, flatulence, and abdominal pain.

 2- Intestinal Obstruction

Also known as bowel obstruction, the intestinal obstruction occurs when the intestine is blocked due to some reasons like injury, tumor, hernia etc. the symptoms include lower abdominal pain in right or left side, vomiting, nausea, etc.

 3- Gastritis

It involves the inflammation of stomach’s inner lining. Reasons can be excess alcohol consumption, trauma, or taking spicy food etc and the symptoms include, vomiting, nausea, lower abdominal pain coupled with cramps when food is taken.

 4- Diverticulitis

It is a condition caused by the inflammation of diverticula or sacs in the stomach. Symptoms include, severe lower abdominal pain after eating, fever, change in bowl habits, nausea etc.

 5- Food Intolerance

Some people may not be able to digest some particular food items ingestion of which results in some negative impacts. It is a condition called food intolerance e.g. wheat or gluten intolerance, and lactose intolerance are the most common types. Pain, nausea and stomach cramps and lower abdominal pain after eating are the symptoms.

Treatment

If you experience lower abdominal pain after eating, you should immediately consult a doctor. The doctor would carry out a physical examination, MRI, and X-ray for proper diagnosis. The treatment of this disorder would depend on the severity of disorder and causes. Though there is no permanent cure for irritable bowel syndrome but the right or left abdominal pain can be cured by medications.

In case of food intolerance, one should try to figure out the food item that causes this pain and then stay away from it. Diverticulitis can be cured through medicine or through surgery in severe cases. Similarly, gastritis can also be cured through medicines but it also needs to be coupled with a prescribed diet.  Intestinal obstruction requires some surgical procedures to be treated.
